U-Beaut Shellawax Friction Polish 250ml
Shellawax is U-Beaut's original one-application friction polish, made specifically for use on the wood lathe. Built on U-Beaut's own hard shellac base, it produces a firm, durable finish that resists marks and blemishes from water, alcohol and heat. It's a foolproof polish that's fast and easy to use, giving an instant shine to all timbers. This non-toxic formula is a favourite among Australian woodturners and dries quickly, making it ideal for turned work, carvings, and furniture alike.
Application
-
Surface prep: Finely sand the wood to at least 400 grit — the finer the sanding, the better the finish.
-
Cloth prep: Use a piece of clean, soft cloth — brushed flannelette sheeting is ideal — folded into a pad four to six layers thick, so you don't burn your fingers when applying at high speed.
-
Applying: Shake the bottle, add a small amount to the folded cloth, and burn it into the timber under friction with the lathe running (stop the lathe for the initial rough application on pieces over 25mm/1" diameter).
-
Raw timber vs. other finishes: Shellawax is designed to be applied to raw timber, though it can go over oils as long as the surface is dry first — it won't key properly if a sanding sealer or other finish is applied beforehand.
-
Best suited to: Smaller spindle-turned items up to about 50mm diameter (like pens), plus small lidded boxes, bowls and faceplate work up to around 150mm diameter. On larger pieces the liquid can dry and soak into end grain too quickly to burn in properly, sometimes leaving a blotchy or uneven finish.
-
For larger bowls or platters: Mix a little Shellawax Cream in with the liquid as an extender — this slows the drying so you have more time to work it into the wood under friction.
Uses
- Turned items such as pens, small lidded boxes, bowls and faceplate work.
- Wood carvings and furniture, as well as turnings.
- Producing a tough, high-gloss, waterproof finish in a single application.
- Working well on burls and detailed pieces where you don't want a build-up in the crevices.
- Ideal for woodturners wanting a fast, no-fuss friction polish with a durable result.
