What is G10? And what can I use it for?

What is G10?

G10 Is a fiberglass laminate type material or also known as a composite material. Its commonly made by layering up sheets of glass cloth soaked in epoxy resin and compressing it under heat until the epoxy cures. This creates a super strong, stiff material with a low thermal expansion, excellent electrical and water resistance, flame retardant and all around dimensionally stable.

Made in large sheets which are then cut down into smaller sheets, blocks and scales for knifemaking as well as many other industrial uses like chip boards, insulators and other mechanical applications that require sheets of material with stability strength at low cost.

Use in Knifemaking

G10, micarta and carbon fibre often share similar properties and are put in the same basket, however out of the 3 G10 is the toughest option. It possesses all the properties you want on a hard-working knife. Its relatively light weight, extremely strong, resistant to chemicals, heat, and water, has great colour variety and possible patterns, is low cost and can have several finishes applied to give it more grip or shine depending on the purpose and use.

In my and many other knifemakers opinion if you’re creating a working knife that’s going to see plenty of use out in the field or even in the kitchen then G10 is a great choice of material to get you started.
